There is a dichotomy between the image of the strong, assertive escort who sells her body for Manolos and La Perla – and the brothel worker, street walker or trafficked woman who is a victim of life, poverty and her clients. Neither cliche is satisfactory. I have more in common with the former than the latter, but my body is more precious than shoes and smalls. I feel sorry for the latter, but worry that my sympathy disempowers them further.

Thank you for bringing up this issue. One thing that bothers me is how other women–even those in other areas of the sex industry–devalue the lives of sex providers. I also work as a PSO, and the operators routinely assure each other that they are not “whores,” and joke about the low-esteem required to be even a dancer, let alone a prostitute. They talk about their higher morality, some even claiming that they will not go to hell, while escorts surely will.
The bottom line is that you have to take care of yourself, guard yourself, manage your risk level yourself, being fully aware that if anything happens to you, you will be just another bitch in a ditch, as insignificant and disposable as a supermarket plastic bag.
